For over 165 years, Woolrich has produced the Buffalo Check pattern at our woolen mill in central Pennsylvania. The pattern was first introduced in 1850 with our now iconic Buffalo Check Wool Shirt. An instant hit with workers and outdoorsmen alike, the rugged piece quickly became synonymous with quality and dependability.
But what about that Buffalo Check pattern? Where did it come from, and why is it called Buffalo Check?
As recognized manufacturers of The Original Buffalo Check™, we think it’s important to talk about the history of this classic pattern.
The famous red and black pattern commonly known as Buffalo Check has Scottish roots that trace all the way back to the 1700s, and maybe even earlier than that. Officially recognized as MacGregor Red and Black by the Scottish Tartans Authority, the pattern is a simple tartan sett associated with the MacGregor Clan. You can learn more about its history here.
Just how this historical pattern made its way across the Atlantic remains a mystery. One thing is for certain though, there’s little evidence to suggest that it was being produced in the States before Woolrich created the Buffalo Check Shirt. And that’s why we lay claim to The Original Buffalo Check™!
Why “Buffalo” Check?
The name seems to connote the wild open spaces of the west. And although this is an interesting thought, the answer lies closer to home (central Pennsylvania). Legend has it that the Woolrich designer who first introduced the distinctive pattern back in 1850 owned a herd of buffalo–nothing more complicated than that. The name stuck, and the rest is history.
